Women in Sport

This weekend the volleyball team and the Ada community celebrated 50 years of Title IX. Title IX is something we as college students hear about all the time but never really understood what it meant. That was until this weekend, generations upon generations of Ohio Northern Volleyball Alum came to our tournament an home over the weekend and stayed for a get together and story telling at the inn afterwards.

Once we arrived at the inn the alumni started pouring in. It was great to talk to them and hear all about their time at ONU and about how much has changed. Then the speeches started and so did the water works. It began with Coach Kuhn talking about the history and then inviting up our new university President. Our President talked about how Title IX has effected her life, she is the first women president her at Ohio Northern which is a monumental mark in our history. Next to give a speech was a fellow player by the name Lea McFadden. She talked about how much ONU volleyball means to her and her family.

Lastly, Sheila Wallace-Kovalchek spoke, she was the volleyball coach that pushed Title IX into this university. She began by telling us stories about how they couldn't afford to go anywhere or stay certain places and how they had to practice in the tiny gym so the main gym was available for the men. This experience of listening to these women really opened my eyes to how blessed we are in this world for how well we are treated. This was so eye opening for me and I am so glad I was able to hear these strong women talk.

  1. That sounds like it was a great experience to be able to hear from past generations and compare your own to theirs. It is impressive to see how much progress we have made to provide equality in sports. It is also sad to see how poor women in sports were treated in past generations. It is a blessing we are moving in the right direction, however, there is always more we can do to provide equality for everyone.

  2. Hi Syd, I was at the volleyball games this weekend when they celebrated title XI. It is crazy to me that something that seems so common to us didn't even exist here at ONU 50 years ago. I could not imagine not having women's sports here. It would be so cool to talk to alumni and hear all the stories they have.

  3. It really is crazy to think that women's sports one day didn't exist. Women's sports has been well in going my entire life and I can't imagine the world without them. I bet it was interesting to here from these alumni that had completely different experiences than we all do now.

  4. That sounds like a great educational experience. It is true for me that I tend to gloss over Title IX. Equality during our college experience can be something students take for granted. I am sure hearing those speeches changed the amount of passion that goes into supporting equal rights for all students. This post made me more interested in reading what goes in to Title IX. The specifics that bring celebration would be great to be educated on.
